This beautiful vintage 1978 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II (lovingly named “Viola” after the previous owner’s grandmother) is almost completely original. Brian Hutchinson and his team at Vault Auto Services, in San Antonio, Texas, painstakingly removed and catalogued every piece of leather, wood and wool from her interior. The leather (including seats, door panels and trim pieces around the dash and interior) was in great condition and just needed to be cleaned then re-dyed back to the original shade (when the seats were removed, there were areas between the seat and seat back that the elements hadn’t faded, which showed the original color, a delicious caramel tan). The contrasting dark brown piping that details each seat was re-dyed in place with the tiniest brush. The wool was in excellent shape and required only a thorough cleaning to be good as new. Every piece in a Rolls-Royce interior (on the dash, door panels, etc.) that looks like wood is indeed the finest grade of often multiple wood species chosen by craftspersons at the factory in England. Typical of a car of this vintage, the wood was in perfect condition but the clear varnish had cracked over the years. After removing the pieces from the interior, the old varnish was carefully stripped off the wood and new glistening clear varnish was applied, bringing the gorgeous book matched veneer to its original splendor! The original carpets only needed cleaning, and new luxuriously thick wool overlays were brought in from England.

Next the Vault crew turned their expert attention to the exterior, performing a 2-stage polish with hand-applied wax on the original two-toned paint—quite a genteel combination! All of the chrome and stainless steel was carefully polished by hand to a mirror finish, and even the undercarriage and inner fenders were detailed. Some imperfections in the paint were repairable, but other minor spots could not be addressed without a complete re-paint and are simply a testament to her all-original survival.

In addition to looking great, Vault personnel wanted her to run well also. A complete tune-up included replacing belts, gaskets and grommets and appropriate parts were anodized or painted if necessary. They finished with an in-depth detail under the bonnet. The engine bay is so clean one could enjoy High Tea on it!

The result is a fine English automobile that is truly a joy to drive and a pleasure to admire.
